"Everyone Who Wants Peace Should Come to Tulkarem!" -
Terry in Tulkarem, West Bank
August 17th, 2002
Hi all,
I am in Tulkarem. We are under curfew every day, for 20-24 hours.
It is hard to get on the net, so this message will be brief, but
i
should have more time this week.
The Palestinian people in Tulkarem are the most friendly people
I have
ever met. Our group of 5 US Americans, and 3 Brits, are treated
like
family. We are given evreything without question.
We arrived here the 14th, (the day after rebecca left, ). We visited
a wonderful
family, and after dinner, we went to the roof. We had a clear view of the green line,
(Israel), and the surrounding settlements.
Tulkarm is an extremely startegic location.
If Palestinains had heavy weapons, it would be easy to do heave
damage to many cities in Israel from here. Thus, the Israeli army
patrols in tanks every day. And every day the Palestinians respond
with Kalishnikovs and homemade bombs. Yesteday while we were being
given a tour of the town (with about 150 kids in tow), a small
bomb
exploded in the distance. We had to stay until after nightfall.
We
walked home (with a few sprints across streets the tanks like
to
patrol), and made it back to the red crescent office, (where we
sleep) without incident.
We have heard many sad stories of murder and toture. But, we have
also played and laughed with many children's summer camp in Tulkarm.
We all get along fantastically. It all sounds more dangerous (for
those of us with bright white faces), than this sounds. Everyone
who
wants peace should come to Tulkarm!
Ill send a more detailed report soon.
Also, check out arij.org. A great resource to learn more about
how
Israel is squeezing the palestinans.
